Without a lasting post, you won't be able to break the hinge in your last, or have any reasonable place to set your shoe in progress for glueing, drying, lasting or de-lasting, etc.  Once you invest in at least 1 lasting post, you'll realize how critical and handy the tool really is.
This post comes with 2 removable pins that have different diameters in order to accommodate any thimble size you have in your lasts.  The pins are swapped by simply loosening the bolt with a wrench, inserting the chosen pin size, and tightening the bolt back down.
This post has 4 pre-drilled holes in the baseplate for mounting to a workbench, or you can simply set it on the floor, stand on each side, and break the hinge in your last in order to last and de-last your shoes.
Made of solid steel, and coated with durable black enamel paint, this lasting post will last a lifetime.
