• Frustrating. The 1981 Suzuki GS450SX is
a frustrating motorcycle. The bike’s sporting
lines and riding posture promise a roadracer’s
capabilities. As you settle behind the quarter-
fairing, your eyes watching the serpentine road
appearing above the raceresque bubble, you
can easily imagine the brave and daring world
of a professional rider. Yet in the end, you dis-
cover that the Suzuki is truly a capable motor-
cycle, but its annoying traits and unfulfilled
promises intrude into your racer-fantasy.
Suzuki’s daring jump into a radical styling
concept for lightweight bikes came last year
with the introduction of the GS450S. Instead of
rehashing the GS400/425 series, Suzuki gave
the 450 a new look and appeal which made it a
standout among the other machines in its class.
The bodywork on the GS450SX seems to be
straight from Europe. A crisp angular motif is
carried throughout, from the sporty quarter-
fairing to the flippered tail section, and this
year the bike receives bold new orange and red
graphics to contrast the rich black paint.
