Suzuki’s GT-38OJ is the smallest of their new
range of three-cylinder touring bikes for 1972. The
engineering philosophy behind this series is pro-
claimed by the GT (Gran Tourismo) designation.
As conceived by the Italian car makers, a GT vehi-
cle summons a certain state of mind on the road: a
state of mind that depends largely upon the opera-
tor’s assurance of being in control. Beyond that
aura of physical extension lie the aspects of aes-
thetic appeal, both to the owner and bystanders,
and a lot of creature comfort for the owner and his
favorite passenger.
Visually, the 380 mostly makes it as a Gran
Tourismo. It’s big and massive and heavy looking, dense and compact. Following
the GT design theme, the 750, 550, and 380 are all very similar in component
shape, instrument/control layout, and finish. If pictures of the three were
compared, with the engine areas blanked out, you would have a hard
time figuring out which bike was which. The colors and tank panel
designs and badges differ, and one has a radiator, but that’s about it.
The fuel tank adds a lot to the bulky, squat look of the 380. Its
MlMk, squarish corners and barrel-chested depth complete the illusion...
